JOINT NEWS RELEASE
Metro Public Health Department and Metro Nashville Public Schools
To Offer H1N1 Vaccination Presentations to Parents of Public School Students

NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 16, 2009 -- The Metro Public Health Department and Metro Nashville Public Schools have announced plans to hold H1N1 flu vaccine information meetings at Hunters Lane High School, Hillsboro High School, Cane Ridge High School, and McGavock High School. The meetings will be held October 20th from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Parents/guardians of students attending any public school in Nashville are encouraged to attend the meetings.  Metro Public Health officials will offer a presentation about the H1N1 vaccine and be available to answer parents/guardians questions.

“We recognize that parents might have questions about the H1N1 vaccine,” said Bill Paul, M.D., Director of Health of Nashville/Davidson County.  “These meetings will offer information and allow attendees the opportunity to ask questions.”

The Health Department and Metro Schools are working together to offer voluntary H1N1 vaccinations to students.  H1N1 vaccine information packets and consent forms were sent home with Metro Schools’ students last week.  Parents were asked to sign the consent form indicating they do or do not give permission to have their child receive the H1N1 vaccine -- FluMist nasal spray or the H1N1 injectable vaccine.  Vaccinations will be given during regular school hours.

The Health Department plans to begin the initiative in Metro Schools the first week in November – pending availability of H1N1 vaccine.  Health officials are expecting to complete school vaccinations before Metro School’s Winter break that begins in December.

Those with questions that are unable to attend the information meetings are encouraged to call the Metro Public Health Department’s H1N1 flu information telephone line at 615/340-7775.  H1N1 flu information is also available at the Metro Public Health Department’s website www.health.nashville.gov.
